What the Heck is a Restomod?

Are you thinking a Restomod is when we install a Lazy-Boy recliner in place of the driver’s seat? Uhmmmm. No.

One of the things we do best at NFI Empire is custom-building vehicles that evoke emotion for our clients. Some clients want their classic cars to stay as true to their vintage era as possible. Others want the old-school classic styling with a touch of new technology. So… what exactly is a “Restomod”? Let’s break it down.

Defining the Restomod

“Restomod” refers to the restoration and modification of classic cars. It’s about integrating the classic automotive design that we all love with modern technology to enhance safety, performance, and comfort. Think of a 1978 Ford Bronco that’s been completely restored and is now powered by a 7.3L Godzilla V8! Fuel injection, BDS suspension, performance disc braking, and a modern hand-stitched interior significantly enhance the driving experience.

Restomod in Action: Our 1978 Ford Bronco

Here’s a prime example of a restomod straight from our shop: We love the style of the dentside Ford Bronco, but wanted to boost both power and comfort. Under the hood, we planted a 7.3L Godzilla V8, outfitted with several unique and performance-enhancing components. Power to the wheels runs through a 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission – designed to manage the engine’s power output and provide versatility across various driving conditions, from highway cruising to off-road excursions.

Sure, the Bronco came with a V8… a carbureted 351 or 400ci that made less than 160hp. This electronically fuel-injected, built 7.3L puts out over 400HP and manages the same fuel economy as those from the 70s. Not only is the 10-speed transmission more efficient than your 70s factory options, but it’s also designed for greater durability and longevity. But a restomod goes much deeper than just an engine swap.

Enhancing Safety and Performance: Modern Upgrades

Powered disc braking systems are taken for granted today. If you got into your car tomorrow morning and it was miraculously outfitted with drum brakes all around, your drive to work would be jolting. Perhaps the most common restomod upgrade is power disc brakes. With all of the horsepower added to the Bronco – it needed stopping power to match.

When your restomod project is all said and done, you have the look of a timeless classic and all of the efficiency, comfort, and convenience of a modern vehicle.

Interior Customization: Creature Comforts in Your Classic

So what’s the deal inside the truck? Interior customization can be just as much fun as the exterior. Install a modern Bluetooth radio and A/C controls that look just like the vintage factory units. RetroSound radio head units blend right into the classic interior. Modern insulation and sound-deadening give you a barrier from the outside world. Seatbelts are always a good idea – and RetroBelt makes them look exactly like their factory predecessors.

Fifty years ago, automakers weren’t as concerned with driver comfort. With a restomod build, you’re in charge, and the sky is the limit for creature comforts. Choose power-adjustable or even heated & ventilated seats – it’s your call. This Bronco’s custom interior was hand-stitched entirely in-house here at NFI Empire.

The Enduring Appeal of the Restomod

Will the “Vintage Classic” ever go away? Absolutely not. There’s a growing market of enthusiasts who love and respect the old-school look but also want to actually drive their cars. They want reliability and ultra-performance while still showcasing the timeless style that vehicles of the past offer.

FAQs about Restomods

Q: What’s the difference between a restoration and a restomod?

A: Great question! A restoration aims to return a classic car to its original, factory condition using period-correct parts. A restomod, on the other hand, mixes restoration with modern modifications, giving you vintage style alongside improved performance, safety, and comfort.

Q: Are restomods valuable?

A: Absolutely! A high-quality restomod can significantly increase a classic car’s value, especially if the upgrades improve drivability, reliability, and performance without sacrificing its vintage appeal. Enthusiasts often prefer restomods because they’re easier (and more enjoyable) to drive regularly.

Q: Can any classic car become a restomod?

A: Pretty much! While some classics are more popular candidates (think Mustangs, Broncos, Camaros, and Corvettes), nearly any classic car or truck can benefit from modern upgrades. The best candidates are typically iconic models that enthusiasts love but wish were easier to drive and maintain.

Q: How much does a restomod typically cost?

A: It varies—a lot. A basic restomod project might cost around $25,000-$50,000, while extensive builds with major engine swaps, custom interiors, and high-end upgrades can exceed $100,000 or more. Ultimately, it depends on how far you want to go and the quality of components chosen.

Q: What are some common upgrades in a restomod?

A: Common restomod upgrades include engine swaps (like installing fuel-injected crate motors), modern braking systems, upgraded suspension, electronic fuel injection, updated transmissions, modern air conditioning, sound systems, Bluetooth radios, insulation and sound-deadening, and custom interiors. Basically, if it’s modern tech that enhances driving enjoyment—it’s fair game.
